Tom Henheffer for The StarAcademics or industry, choosing is a perennial problem for students around the world, especially those pursuing post-graduate studies. They're insular communities that rarely communicate, and, say experts, both would benefit from an exchange of ideas brought on by a system that encourages young professionals to switch between the academic and corporate worlds. To tackle this issue, the EuroScience Open Forum hosted a lunchtime panel discussion titled The perennial career dilemma: Academia or industry, is there a third way? According to Conor O'Carroll, the panel's moderator and research director at the Irish Universities Association, most students in Europe plan to remain in the academic world after graduating. Their supervisors also generally encourage this path. But the vast majority wind up in industry. This wouldn't necessarily be a problem, but the two worlds are very different, and an opening of communication and employment channels would encourage an exchange of skills that could benefit both. "You can go from industry to academia and back again, but we need to invest more in it so everyone knows it's possible," Carole Van Der Donckt, a researcher at the University of Antwerp in Belgium, told an audience of about 80 people. "Everyone is afraid of doing it." She said the team-based, results-oriented industrial world would benefit from the addition of more researchers with an academic background, who often work alone and on projects that are not necessarily driven by the potential for commercialization. "The industry is much more about working in a team, but being an academic (means) learning to be creative on your own, developing a criticism toward science and what you're doing," she said. "Those are really important skills you can bring into the industry" Jana Ognjenevic, a life sciences researcher at the Univeristy of Belgrade, said an under-developed pharmaceutical industry means Serbian students have little choice but to pursue an academic career. But, she said, researchers still feel the pressure to choose projects that have the potential to be picked up by commercial companies. "Industry," she said, "is where you make money." Daniela Calclu, a Romanian architect with experience in both the academic and corporate worlds, suggested an emphasis on project-based learning and government funding for innovation training at universities would make academic-based researchers more attractive to companies looking to hire. O'Carroll, for his part, said part of openness problem stems from a lack of SMEs with the ability to hire PhD students. "It's indeed easier for an Irish graduate to get a job with an American multinational than an Irish SME," he said. And, he added, PhD students often have a difficult time moving between insular worlds because they simply fail to sell themselves properly. Their resumes, he said, concentrate on research papers and publications, and fail to mention the skills they've learned through their academic work -- skills such as reliability, teamwork, and the ability to meet deadlines. In the end, the panel agreed that the academic and industrial worlds aren't necessarily as polarized as many researchers seem
